Introduction

Polycrystalline alumina fiber (PAF) represents the highest tier of commercially available refractory fiber insulation, with Al₂O₃ content typically exceeding 95 % and a continuous-service rating of 1600–1700 °C. The fiber microstructure consists primarily of α-alumina and δ-alumina crystalline phases, making it exceptionally resistant to creep, grain growth, and chemical attack at temperatures that cause silica-containing fibers to melt or devitrify.

Production of PAF is technically demanding — the core manufacturing technology was historically confined to a few companies in Japan, the UK, and Germany.
