Introduction

This passivation mechanism is what allows MoSi₂ elements to function continuously at temperatures well above those achievable with metallic alloy elements, making them the only practical choice for lab and industrial furnaces operating above 1500 °C in air.

SiC elements cover the mid-temperature range with a simpler resistive mechanism. They are mechanically stiffer than MoSi₂, available in longer lengths, and significantly less expensive — making them the standard choice for the large installed base of 1000–1350 °C industrial furnaces in ceramics, metallurgy, and electronics.
