Zirconia & High-Alumina Fiber Insulation Materials

-- Steady & Reliable Manufacturer --

Introduction

Zirconia and high-alumina fibers occupy the pinnacle of the refractory fiber performance pyramid. Zirconia fibers (ZrO₂ content typically ≥ 67%, often stabilized with Y₂O₃ or CaO) can withstand continuous operating temperatures up to 1800 °C and resist chemical environments — strong acids, molten metals, and reducing atmospheres — that would degrade both alumina-silica and even pure alumina fibers. High-alumina fibers in the 67–80% Al₂O₃ range fill the performance gap between standard aluminum silicate and pure polycrystalline alumina fibers.

These materials are not general-purpose bulk insulation. They are specified when a standard ceramic fiber solution has already been tried and found inadequate, or when the process chemistry dictates a material with no silica content at all. Typical buyers are research institutions, aerospace contractors, specialty metallurgy operations, and advanced ceramics producers working at the limits of current thermal process technology.

Nengcheng supplies zirconia-enhanced fiber in blanket, board, and vacuum-formed shape configurations, as well as high-alumina fiber (67–80% Al₂O₃) as a cost-performance step between standard aluminum silicate and full polycrystalline alumina. Both product lines are sourced from batch-tested raw materials with XRF certification of chemistry.

Application

  • Zirconia fiber — ultra-high-temperature furnaces: hot-face lining in furnaces operating above 1600 °C, including sintering furnaces for advanced ceramics, SiC, and silicon nitride
  • Zirconia fiber — corrosive atmosphere processes: insulation in furnaces processing reactive metals (titanium, hafnium, niobium) where silica fiber contamination would compromise product purity
  • Zirconia fiber — molten glass contact: fiber board used as parting material in contact with molten optical glass where silica dissolution must be avoided
  • High-alumina fiber — step-up from standard Al-Si fiber: used when 1260–1430 °C temperature ratings prove insufficient but the full cost of polycrystalline alumina is not justified
  • High-alumina fiber — atmosphere furnaces: enhanced resistance to reducing and inert atmospheres compared to standard Al-Si fiber grades
  • Research & defense: thermal protection systems, rocket motor test cell insulation, and reentry vehicle TPS (thermal protection system) simulation rigs

Advantage

  • 1800 °C continuous service (zirconia): the highest continuous-use temperature of any commercially available fibrous insulation — enables processes simply not possible with other fiber types
  • Silica-free chemistry: zirconia fiber contains no SiO₂, eliminating silica vapor contamination of sensitive high-temperature processes
  • Exceptional chemical resistance: zirconia is stable in environments that attack both silicate and alumina fibers, including strong acids and molten metal splashes
  • Y₂O₃ stabilization prevents phase transformation: yttria-stabilized zirconia fibers do not undergo the monoclinic-to-tetragonal phase transition that would otherwise cause cracking on thermal cycling
  • High-alumina grade bridges cost-performance gap: 67–80% Al₂O₃ fiber offers significantly better high-temperature performance than standard Al-Si fiber at a fraction of the cost of full polycrystalline alumina
  • Batch chemistry certification: every batch XRF-tested and certified — critical for aerospace and research applications with traceability requirements
