Introduction

Ceramic fiber paper is the thinnest product form in the refractory fiber portfolio — typically 1–10 mm in thickness — produced by a wet papermaking process in which ceramic fibers and organic binders are formed into a thin sheet on a wire-mesh belt, then dried and calendared to consistent thickness and density. The organic binders burn out on first heat-up, leaving a flexible, lightweight insulating sheet with no significant volatile content.

Despite its apparent simplicity, ceramic fiber paper performs several thermal engineering roles that thicker products cannot. As a parting sheet between kiln furniture and ceramic ware, it prevents firing adhesion while protecting polished kiln car surfaces. As a gasket material, it seals irregular mating surfaces in furnace door frames and manhole covers. As an interleaving material in multi-layer metal strip processing, it prevents diffusion bonding between metal layers at high temperature.

Nengcheng produces paper in standard (1260 °C) and high-alumina (1430 °C) grades, in thicknesses from 1 mm to 6 mm, and in rolls up to 1200 mm wide for efficient cutting to customer-specified widths and lengths.

  • Yes, for most electronic ceramics. Fiber paper grades are low in alkali impurities and free of organic residue above 500 °C, making them suitable as setter surfaces for alumina, zirconia, and ferrite components. However, for very sensitive materials (e.g., barium titanate compositions), a high-purity alumina board or setter may be preferable to minimize any possibility of silica vapor reaction at peak temperature.
  • What is the maximum temperature for the organic binder before it emits visible smoke?
  • The organic binder (PVA/starch) begins to pyrolyze around 300–350 °C and completes burnout by 500 °C. Some visible smoke and organic odor are normal during this first heat-up phase. Adequate furnace ventilation is recommended during initial firing of paper in a new installation. After the first heat-up cycle, no further off-gassing occurs.
  • How do I die-cut ceramic fiber paper gaskets?
  • Fiber paper cuts well with steel-rule dies on a hydraulic or mechanical press. For thin paper (1–2 mm), a sharp blade on a cutting mat is sufficient for low-volume work. For high-volume production of complex gasket profiles, CNC water-jet cutting produces the cleanest edges with no tool wear issues.   • Does fiber paper absorb moisture during storage?
  • Fiber paper is hygroscopic and will absorb ambient moisture if stored in humid conditions. For applications where moisture absorption is a concern (e.g., direct contact with electrical components), store rolls in sealed plastic bags with silica gel desiccant. Moisture is driven off on first heat-up without affecting performance.
  • Can fiber paper be bonded to ceramic fiber board to make a composite panel?
  • Yes. A 1–3 mm layer of fiber paper can be bonded to ceramic fiber board using high-temperature ceramic cement or colloidal silica binder to create a composite panel with a smooth, dense hot face over an insulating board substrate. This combination is used in kiln car decks where a clean surface finish is needed but the structural depth of board is required.
